Text Diff Checker
The text diff checker compares two pieces of text line by line and highlights what was added, removed or left unchanged. Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right. You can ignore case and extra spaces, and everything stays in your browser.
How the comparison works
The tool finds the longest run of lines that the two texts share, called the longest common subsequence. Lines only in the original are shown as removals, lines only in the changed text as additions, and everything else as unchanged context. This is the same idea used by version control tools.
- Red lines with a minus exist only in the original.
- Green lines with a plus exist only in the changed text.
- Plain lines are the same in both.
Uses
- Checking what changed between two drafts of an article or contract.
- Comparing configuration files, logs or exported data.
- Spotting accidental edits before you publish.
Questions people ask
Does it compare words or characters?
It compares whole lines. To spot a small change inside a line, look at the removed and added pair side by side.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Why are identical-looking lines marked as changed?
Trailing spaces, tabs or different line endings can differ. Tick the ignore-spaces option to treat them as the same.
