Hash Generator
The hash generator turns any text or file into MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums. Type or paste text and the hashes update as you type, or drop a file to verify a download. Everything is computed inside your browser and nothing is uploaded.
What a hash is
A hash function turns data of any size into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and even a one-character change produces a completely different one. This makes hashes useful for checking that a file arrived intact and for spotting accidental changes.
| Algorithm | Output length | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| MD5 | 128 bits (32 hex) | Checksums and legacy systems, not security |
| SHA-1 | 160 bits (40 hex) | Legacy checks, no longer secure against collisions |
| SHA-256 | 256 bits (64 hex) | File integrity, signatures, general purpose |
| SHA-384 / SHA-512 | 384 / 512 bits | Higher security margins |
Questions people ask
How do I verify a download?
Hash the downloaded file here and compare the result with the checksum the publisher lists. If they match exactly, the file is intact.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. A hash is one-way. Weak inputs like short passwords can still be guessed by trying many candidates, which is why salts and slow hash functions matter.
Why does my text give a different hash elsewhere?
Hidden differences such as a trailing newline, different line endings or encoding change the hash. This tool hashes the UTF-8 bytes of exactly what you typed.
