Days between two dates
How the difference is counted
Total days
Days = end date − start dateBy default the start date is counted and the end date isn’t, like counting nights in a hotel. Choose “include the end date” when both days count, such as a leave period from Monday to Friday (5 days, not 4).
Years, months and days
Whole months are counted first, then the remaining daysFrom 31 January, one month later is taken as the last day of February, so leap years and short months are handled correctly.
Worked examples
- 52 days = 7 weeks and 3 days = 1 month and 22 days
- Difference = 4 days; including the end date = 5 days
Days in each month
| Month | Days | Month | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | July | 31 |
| February | 28 (29 in leap years) | August | 31 |
| March | 31 | September | 30 |
| April | 30 | October | 31 |
| May | 31 | November | 30 |
| June | 30 | December | 31 |
A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400. 2024 and 2028 are leap years; 2100 is not.
