Image to Base64 Converter
The image to Base64 converter encodes any PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP or SVG file as a Base64 string. Copy it as a plain string, a full data URI, a ready-made HTML img tag or a CSS background rule. Your image is read inside your browser and never uploaded.
What Base64 does to an image
Base64 turns binary data into plain text using 64 safe characters. A data URI wraps that text with the file type, like data:image/png;base64,..., so the image can sit inside HTML, CSS or JSON with no separate file request.
| Format | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Data URI | The src of an img tag, or a CSS url() |
| Base64 string | APIs and JSON fields that expect raw Base64 |
| HTML img tag | Pasting a self-contained image into an email or page |
| CSS background | Small icons and patterns in a stylesheet |
When to inline an image
- Small icons and logos under about 10 KB save a request.
- Large photos should stay as normal files, because Base64 is about 33% bigger and cannot be cached on its own.
- HTML emails sometimes block remote images, so inline data can help.
Questions people ask
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your browser and converted on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why is the Base64 text larger than the file?
Base64 stores 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the text is roughly 33% larger than the original image.
Can I convert Base64 back to an image?
Yes. Paste the data URI into a browser address bar, or use it as the src of an img tag, and the image will display. You can then save it.
