How eBay fees work

eBay charges a final value fee, a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays, which includes the item price, shipping and sales tax collected. For most US categories the standard rate is about 13.6% on the first $7,500, plus a small fixed fee per order. Some categories (sneakers, trading cards, books, musical instruments and others) have different rates, and Top Rated sellers can qualify for discounts.

ChargeTypical US value
Final value feeAbout 13.6% of item + shipping + tax
Per-order fee$0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 above
Promoted Listings StandardAd rate you choose, charged only on sales from the ad
These are starting values, not a guarantee. Check eBay’s fee page for your category and update the rate fields.

The formula

Fees = (price + shipping charged + sales tax) × final value % + per-order fee + (price + shipping) × ad rate. Profit = price + shipping charged − fees − item cost − your postage cost.

Example. Item $40, buyer shipping $6, no tax: total $46. Final value fee 13.6% = $6.26, plus $0.40 per order = $6.66. With a $15 item cost and $6 postage, profit is $46 − $6.66 − $15 − $6 = $18.34.

Questions people ask

Is the fee charged on shipping?

Yes. eBay applies the final value fee to the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and, in many places, sales tax.

What if the item does not sell?

You pay no final value fee. You may pay insertion fees if you exceed your monthly free listings.

Do promoted listings always cost money?

Standard promoted listings charge only when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within the attribution window.
