Document Tools
Free online document tools: view the hidden metadata in PDF, DOCX and EPUB files, pull the text out of a Word document, find out what a file really is, count word frequency, detect text encoding and convert between Markdown and HTML.
Documents carry more than what you can see on the page. A PDF or Word file can quietly store the author’s name, the software used, editing dates and even tracked changes. Our document inspection tools show you exactly what is inside a file before you send it, publish it or import it somewhere else.
Every tool opens your file in the browser and reads it locally. Nothing is uploaded, so the tools are safe to use with contracts, drafts and personal documents.

Why check a document’s metadata?
- Privacy: author names, company names and editing history can be stored in files you share. Check before sending.
- Professionalism: a PDF titled “Untitled” or “Draft v7 FINAL” looks careless in a browser tab and in search results.
- Troubleshooting: mismatched extensions and wrong encodings are common reasons a file “won’t open” or shows garbled text.
- Publishing: e-book stores and libraries rely on correct EPUB metadata for titles, languages and identifiers.
Frequently asked questions
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Files are read in your browser. They are not sent to our servers or stored.
Can these tools open password-protected files?
No. Encrypted files cannot be read in the browser. Remove the password in the program that created the file first.
Does the DOCX tool work with older .doc files?
No. It reads the modern .docx format. Open an old .doc file in Word and save it as .docx first.
Can I remove metadata with these tools?
These tools show what is stored. To remove it, use the program’s own “Inspect Document” or “Export” options, then check the new file here.
