Mean, median and mode

Mean (arithmetic average)

Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values

Median

Middle value when sorted; for an even count, the mean of the two middle values

Mode

The value that appears most often (there can be more than one, or none)

Standard deviation

σ = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n)  ·  s = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1))

σ is the population standard deviation; s is the sample standard deviation, used when your numbers are a sample of a bigger group.

Worked example: 12, 15, 18, 15, 22, 30, 15, 19

  1. Sum = 146; count = 8; mean = 146 ÷ 8 = 18.25
  2. Sorted: 12, 15, 15, 15, 18, 19, 22, 30 → median = (15 + 18) ÷ 2 = 16.5
  3. Mode = 15 (appears 3 times); range = 30 − 12 = 18

Which average should I use?

  • Mean for evenly spread data such as test scores or daily temperatures.
  • Median when a few extreme values would distort the mean, such as house prices or salaries.
  • Mode for the most common choice, such as shoe sizes or survey answers.
  • Weighted average when values count differently; use the Grade Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 9 is 21 ÷ 3 = 7.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean uses every value’s size; the median is just the middle value. With 10, 12 and 200, the mean is 74 but the median is 12.

Can I paste numbers from Excel?

Yes. Copy a column or row and paste it in; tabs and new lines are treated as separators.

Non-numeric entries are ignored.
