How sheet vinyl is calculated
Sheet vinyl is cut from a roll of fixed width. If the room is narrower than the roll you need one piece; if it is wider, you need two or more drops joined with a seam. The calculator tries the roll both ways across the room and picks the one that uses less material.
Drops and cut length
Drops = ⌈room width ÷ roll width⌉ · Cut length = drops × (room length + trim)Trim is 10 cm (6 in) per drop to scribe the edges against the walls.
How LVT is calculated
Boxes
Boxes = ⌈area × (1 + waste%) ÷ box coverage⌉Use 10% waste for planks laid straight and 15% for tiles laid diagonally.
Worked examples
- Roll across the 3.6 m width: 1 drop × (4.5 + 0.1) = 4.6 m → 18.4 m²
- Roll across the 4.5 m length would need 2 drops × 3.7 m = 29.6 m²
- Answer: cut 4.6 m from a 4 m roll, no seam
- 1 drop × (15 + 0.5) = 15.5 ft → 186 ft² = 20.7 yd²

How do I measure for vinyl flooring?
Measure the longest length and widest width of the room, including into door openings, then add 10 cm (4–6 in) to each for trimming.
What widths does sheet vinyl come in?
Usually 2, 3 and 4 m in Europe and 6 and 12 ft in North America.
How is sheet vinyl sold in the US?
By the square yard. Divide square feet by 9.
